History:
The history of very first “Paramedic” vocational academic education of Turkey starts at June, 09-16 1990, when DEU Rector of that period Prof. Dr. Namık Çevik had visited the Cambrian College at Canada (CCC) and signed a bilateral treaty on establishment of Ambulance and Emergency Care vocational program at DEU Vocational School Of Healthcare (VSH), in Turkey. At July, 1991 DEU and CCC had finished their work on the Project and presented for approval to Higher Educational Council (YOK) in Turkey. DEU and CCC gave a start the 3-year project at April of 1992, and at 22nd of December YOK had approved the Project. So that 22nd of December in each year has been celebrated as “The Paramedic Day” in Turkey. Thanks to great efforts of the founding father and VSH chair of that period Prof. Dr. Necla Cevik, the very first 15-student group had started their education at 1993 fall term after the approval of the establishment by the Senate of University as the program named as Ambulance and Emergency Care Technician Program and was the first-ever in Turkey. That very first inception at DEU, has reached now a mass of 64 High Schools, 91 VSH programs, 1689 quota (2010-11), 3260 students (2010-11) and more than 4800 graduates (1993-2011) and each year this army of healthcare is getting bigger. Although the name of the program has been changed to First and Emergency Aid since 2011, all graduates are still known as Paramedic.
Purpose of the Program:
Pre-hospital emergency medical services, basic and advanced life support for injured patients and capable ofall kinds of appropriate emergency management system can recognize the trauma of the first interventionswere sick or injured people to hospitals by ambulance in a safe manner that would enable the technician to educate health care.
Contents of the training:
Ambulance Paramedics systems present new perspectives and radical changes as a result of pre-hospital emergency system have become an important and necessary element. Program meets the needs of the industry in this direction in this important mission, knowledge, skills and equipment to undertake and maintain a leading role in the training of paramedics gained supremacy. In line with expectations and the need for life-longdevelopment of the health sector tends to make a difference and to train paramedics have sufficient knowledge and skills in the field of training, students as well as professional knowledge and skills to communicate effectively, work in teams, aims to acquire the ability to solve problems and be able to realize . 4. Recognition of prior learning:
Students take courses in the same program at another university credits, the program continued with the approval of the recommendation of the Directorate and the Health Services Vocational College are accepted ascredits counted towards the program.
5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations: Certificate Supplement 4.2.
In order to graduate from the program are defined curriculum, professional for 90 ECTS compulsory courses and internships, for a total of 30 ECTS of elective courses must be taken and the ECTS must complete 120.Courses in grade 60 and above. Attendance is mandatory, 70% of theoretical courses, practical courses mustattend 80%. 6. Program profile:
In the program, physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, pharmacology, as well as courses in the basic medical sciences, general culture lessons. Vocational courses as Emergency Patient Care, Emergency Health Services, resuscitation, trauma, Advanced Life Support Applications, Physical Education and Body Buildinglessons. Elective courses in the curriculum of professional development, and social and cultural development is supported. In program, there are two stages 6 week at the end of class 1, and 3 weeks at the end of the fall semester class 2, including the head of their training program approved by the Dokuz Eylul University Hospitalor other hospitals (Faculty of Medicine, Hospital, Public Hospitals, Private Hospitals) or 112 Ambulanceservices being present. In program, there are the basic English lessons in the first year and professional English lesson in second year.
